Vendor Highlights: MANDY McKENNA
We are happy to feature another very talented beauty expert. Mandy McKenna has done the hair and makeup for a handful of fashion shows here at Altar Bridal. She is as sweet as can be which you can tell from her answers below!
How did you get into the bridal industry?
I basically fell into it. I have been in the beauty industry since 2000, in some capacity. While in Cosmetology school, I started working on fashion/beauty photo shoots. This later progressed to working on a “For His Eyes Only” shoot with a soon-to-be bride. She requested my services for her big day…and now here I am! I’m pretty much a perfectionist, so it only makes since that this is where I ended up 😉
How many years have you been doing hair and makeup?
I have been a licensed Cosmetologist for almost seven years.
What is your favorite part of your job?
My favorite part is making women feel as beautiful on the outside as they are in the inside. I love hearing, “I’ve never seen myself look so beautiful” and “Ooh myyy goshh!” This really warms my heart. I want my clients to glow and be confident in their skin.
I’ve been an artist my entire life, this is just another creative outlet. I love the transformation.
What do you think is the best thing that you offer to your clients?
I offer a self-esteem booster. There is nothing easier, to give your style a little something extra, than a new makeup look. I don’t always know how my clients normally wear their makeup. I get the feel for their comfort level, and sometimes they have pictures; then I emphasize their best features (usually the eyes, I love enhancing the color of my client’s eyes).
I help keep everyone calm on the day of the wedding. I’ve had to give calming pep talks, make martinis or mimosas for moms and I even help a lot of brides get into their dresses. It really depends on what’s going on and where help is needed, every bridal party is different. I want everyone nice and relaxed when they are in my chair.
I also try to educate as many people as I can about the importance of the ingredients in skin care and makeup. I wish someone would have stressed the importance of moisturizing and the Oil Cleansing Method to me much earlier. In addition, a lot of people don’t realize how many things are tested on animals. So now I feel it’s my duty to spread the word on these subjects.
What do you do in your free time- just for fun?!
Work? Haha I’m a workaholic. But seriously, some things I enjoy: hiking with my fur-kids (Aussie Shepherd Mix and Pitbull/Lab, both rescues), painting/drawing, cooking, going to the lake, pretty much all watersports, snowboarding, researching hair and makeup techniques and lunch/dinner dates with my friends and family.
