This week we are featuring SCOUT PHOTO. Photographers Carlos and Nick are two super fun guys who truly love what they do and would be a blast to hang out with. One of our brides, Molly, is featured below with the auburn hair and the gorgeous smile. Enjoy!
How did you get into the bridal photography business?
Nick and I were both shooting a lot of fine-art/photojournalism style stuff and we were good friends and both really respected each-others work. We decided to start shooting weddings just as a way to make money so that we could do more fine-art, but the more we did it, the more we realized how much fun it was. It is truly rewarding to take a photo that will actually be important to someone for the rest of their lives. Now shooting weddings is not a means towards another “cooler” or more “artistic” goal. We do it because we really love it.
How many years have you been in the industry?
I have been shooting weddings for four years, but we have been shooting under the name SCOUT for two. Before that we both had been shooting musicians and random portraits since 2004.
What is your favorite part of your job?
The best actual moment is their reaction when you give them the photos for the first time. It’s been a month or so since the wedding and they get to live that day again for the first time and you can just feel their excitement. I would also say that the best part in general is just getting to know our couples and making new friends with some really cool people that we wouldn’t have met otherwise.
What do you think is the best thing you have to offer to your clients?
We care so much about our photos and the people we are shooting. We don’t just take the same photos at every wedding and then go home and push a button so they all look the same. We intentionally hang out a few times before the wedding day so that we know you more like a friend than a client, so when the wedding day comes, we are completely comfortable with each other and we know what you want because we actually know you.
Plus… I can guarantee we will make you laugh.
How would you describe your photography style?
I would say we have a photojournalistic/editorial style. We also both come from fine-art backgrounds, so we throw some of that in there too. We don’t set things up. We don’t say “hey, leave the room and come back in again with these flowers in your hand”. We hang out with you all day and capture every single little detail you can think of, and especially capture the emotion of the day.
What do you do in your free time- just for fun?!
Other than hanging out with our wives, Nick’s baby, or our pets…
We are both super into playing music and are usually in more than one band at a time. We also love Sporting KC with a passion.
