Zach and I met at the University of Kansas at the one and only “Wagon Wheel” bar. He was in his first year of law school and I was a senior in College. That first night, Zach bought me a shot of the “specials” board and the rest was history.
Zach and I got engaged over my birthday weekend in Vail, Colorado on December 9th, 2017 along Gore Creek. We were staying in a house on Vail Mountain. The morning of our engagement, we made brunch (one of our favorite pastimes) and were drinking mimosas. Zach insisted we go on a walk along the creek to take some pictures. The entire trip I was making fun of him for bringing a tripod with us on the trip. We recently traveled toIceland where we used a tripod, so I was not surprise that he insisted on bringing it. It didn’t occur to me that he was “practicing” using a tripod while we were in Iceland. We made drinks and began our hike along gore creek as he made me sing along to Santa Baby – “Santa baby, forgot to mention one little thing, a ring. I don’t mean on the phone.”
When we reached the creek, we found the perfect spot for a picture together. I thought Zach was setting the timer on the camera, but he was setting up a video instead. We posed for our first “picture” and then Zach faced us toward the creek to take in the scenery and the moment. He then put my hand on his heart and I asked why it was beating so hard. He told me he loved me and got on his knee and asked me to marry him. I was so excited and surprised that I almost tackled him out of the camera window. Little did I know the video was running the entire time so we have our special moment to relive over and over.
Zach then surprised me with a gondola ride up to a restaurant on the mountain where a bottle of champagne was waiting for us. The day continued with many more glasses of champagne, happiness and us starting the rest of our lives together.
We knew that we wanted to get married outside of Kansas City and have a smaller wedding so we decided to get married where our new beginning first started – Vail. But more specifically, just down the creek from where we got engaged.
Special Wedding Details
- One of our best friends, Sarah Hageman married us. Sarah is one of those people that lights up a room when she walks in it and makes the people around her better. She had never officiated a wedding before so having her marry us was truly special. I am confident we won’t be her last!
- One of our favorite moments of our special day was having our first look on top of Vail Mountain before our ceremony.
- I had a first look with my dad before the ceremony, which was one of the most special moments I could have asked for. My sisters walked our dad along Gore Creek Trail to meet me in the Hotel Talisa Gardens – this was such a precious father/daughter moment.
- Zach’s grandpa made Zach a shot ski out of old ski’s for Christmas a few years ago. This quickly became one of our favorite things to bring out when we have friends over. We decided to carry on our tradition of supplying our friends with a Shot Ski and incorporated it into our wedding. After the speeches and dinner, the DJ asked the bridal party to the dance floor where the bride groom and bridal party kicked off the dance party with a shot ski.
