Real Bride: Margie K.

From the bride: Jeff and I met our freshman year at Miami of Ohio. We don’t specifically remember our initial meeting, but had several friends in common and would often see each other around campus or out at different events. We both lived in Chicago for four years after graduation, and stayed in touch and saw each other out occasionally as friends. In the Spring of 2012, I moved home to Kansas City, and Jeff was transferred to St. Louis for work. He reached out to me to get together for drinks when he was in Kansas City for a work meeting in December of that year. We met at Gram & Dunn for cocktails, and spent the whole evening laughing and catching up. That sparked a long-distance relationship, and in September of 2013 I moved to St. Louis. 2 years later, we were walking our dog Scrappy through our favorite park, and Jeff proposed to me with my grandmother’s ring, and followed it with a surprise dinner where we had our first date (with almost 20 friends and family members there to celebrate).

We knew right away that we wanted to plan our wedding in Frankfort, Michigan where my mom’s family spent each summer before she was born, and where I grew up spending every summer. I had seen my dream dress on Altar Bridal’s Instagram even before Jeff and I were engaged, and knew that if this dress fit, it was the one! I made my appointment to go with my mom, sister, and sister-in-law the day after Thanksgiving. It was the first dress I tried on, and it was an absolute dream!

Planning a wedding from a distance can be difficult and requires a lot of organization and trust, but being able to picture wearing my dream dress on our big day made things feel more tangible. About 5 months before the wedding, Jeff was transferred to the north Chicago suburbs for work, so we added a new job, big move and first home purchase to our list of life changes this year. While planning was chaotic at times, we had so much help from family, friends, and wonderful vendors in making the day perfect.

Our wedding day started with a rainbow over the Harbor, and despite a forecast of scattered showers throughout the day, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky and it was unseasonably warm for late September. Our day started with the most thoughtful bridesmaids brunch at my friends cottage, followed by hair and makeup at the salon, and getting dressed at my parents cottage in the woods. Jeff and I were married by a dear friend on a beach overlooking Lake Michigan under a beautiful hand-made Chuppah surrounded by family and closefriends. The reception was held at an old Coast Guard Station on the water that has been converted into an art center, and the art displays added so much color and flair to the reception decor.

Frankfort is not an easy destination to reach for many people, and we felt very fortunate for all of the people who made the trip to spend the weekend celebrating with us. It was truly the best day of our lives!
