From the bride: Ben and I don’t have the most romantic “meet-cute” as they say. We met at a college party over beer pong and shots of Fireball. We were both students at South Dakota State University, I was studying mass communications and he was studying environmental engineering. I grew up on a farm in South Dakota and he was from a small town in Minnesota. We started dating a couple years after we met. (I already had a boyfriend!) After graduation, we moved down to Kansas City together in 2014 for his dream job at an environmental engineering company. It took me a while but I also found my dream job, working in marketing at Red Nova Labs.
We got engaged in September 2015 in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We were on vacation with Ben’s family. Prior to the vacation, Ben had ordered a ring online for me and shipped it to his parents’ house so I would be none the wiser. Ben’s parents rented a really beautiful, rustic cabin for all of us to stay at in the mountains of South Dakota. We spent a lot of time outside hiking, sitting by the fire and eating delicious food. On the last day of the trip, Ben and I hiked up one of the peaks and climbed to the top of a jagged-looking boulder. (We were really into trying to find a secret peak that we could dub “Mt. Haecherl.”) When we got to the top (after like a 35 minute hike!), we were WAY up there. We decided this was definitely going to be Mt. Haecherl. The sun was setting over the mountains and we could see for miles. Then Ben got down on one knee and proposed! Of course, I said yes. It was honestly so much better than anything I could have imagined. We hiked back down to the cabin, met his parents by the fire and told them the good news. It was amazing.
We decided to have our wedding in Sioux Falls to make the event closer to our family. Ben and I are big dog people (we have an English Bulldog and a rescue pit bull mix), and we also wanted our wedding to capture the rustic, mountain magic of our engagement weekend. Our colors were slate grey, teal, and marsala. I love succulents, so we included succulents in all of our floral arrangements. The day went by so fast! My favorite part was just being with all of our family and friends who we love and getting everyone together to have a killer party. I think my husband’s favorite part was definitely the party bus and the reception. We had such a fun party – complete with a bulldog shot luge and LED dance floor.
