From the bride: Matt and I met in January of 2015 at a one-man band show in a small town in Iowa (with a population of 186!) Come to find out we had grown up about 25 miles apart but never knew each other. We went on our first date one month later-timing was not convenient for us because he moved two hours away the week after we met. Most of our dating relationship was long-distance (he lived in Des Moines and I lived in NE Missouri). Matt proposed on March 5th, 2016 at a park in Nashville, TN while 2 of my childhood friends, their husbands, and my sister and her husband watched. On our way home from Nashville my sister and I looked up openings for This Old Barn and it worked out perfectly- their only opening was October 29th! (I love October and wanted an October wedding and Matt is an avid Hawkeye football fan and that was their bye weekend, haha!) We booked the venue that next day after visiting it and falling in love with it.
Planning for the wedding was fairly easy-I enjoy crafting and Matt is good at helping with wood-working and running the power tools so we planned on making a lot of the decorations ourselves. We spent a lot of that summer crafting and preparing for the big day. The barn was the ideal place for our wedding because it was small, intimate with a laid-back feel, and perfect for incorporating the vintage, bohemian, and colorful decorations we created.
The theme for the wedding was inspired by personal preference (bohemian), a love for vintage things, and nature as well because we had moss, artichokes, and pomegranates as center-pieces for the tables. Matt and I both wanted to incorporate a little bit of our personalities into the wedding decorations as we both have a very goofy, not-to-be-taken-seriously side. We printed off silly and slightly embarrassing pictures of ourselves when we were young and placed them in card-holders at each of the tables and by the guestbook. We also had funny and sarcastic signs all around for our guests to enjoy. One surprise I was really excited about was a very silly-and completely out of my comfort zone-choreographed bride/bridesmaids dance we performed for Matt that was so fun practicing with my goofy bridesmaids. Another thing we have in common is a love for sweets! We had a dessert bar with cupcakes, 8” round cakes, and a variety of cookies.
The weather was absolutely perfect that day and we couldn’t have asked for a more amazing venue to celebrate our marriage with family and friends!
