From the Bride:

Their Story

Mark and Nicci met at work in the winter of 2014. Mark was captain of the intern team at Northwestern Mutual and quickly went full-time before they had a chance to get to know one another. Nicci invited herself over to Mark’s house a couple times, enticing him with chicken and steak, before he decided to ask her over on his own. After the summer ended, he asked her out on their first date to Hiro 88 for sushi. A few weeks following, Nicci invited him to a Royals game to meet her family (who lived in Kansas City at the time). The Poehling’s fell instantly in love with him and Mark and Nicci have been inseparable ever since that game.

A few months later, Mark took Nicci back to the farm to meet his family. The Peterson’s were warm, welcoming and incredibly generous. It didn’t take long for her to realize she wanted to be a part of this family for the rest of her life. They have spent a lot of time on the farm over the past three years, as well as in Chicago for a Cubs game, Kansas City to visit family, out East with the Peterson gang and family weddings, and different areas around the Midwest. They have experienced exciting times and they have accomplished great things after three years together. They have been raising two beautiful dogs; Baxter (who Nicci has owned since she was 13) and Bocephus (impromptu adoption after accidentally falling in love with him in November of 2016) and live in the Northeast area of Lincoln.

The Proposal

Mark proposed to Nicci in a forest with the dogs and it was perfect. He distracted her with a fake deer and guided her to a clearing in the dog park that was covered with red rose petals and a sign that read “WILL YOU MARRY ME?”. Nicci was convinced that they intruded on someone’s wedding before Mark got on his knee and asked her to marry him. She didn’t hear the question over her tears. He asked her again and she answered, “YES!” Her mother, Cindy, and their friend, Amber, were there to take pictures and capture the wonderful moment.

Ceremony Secrets: Floral Inspiration

There is a special sentiment behind every flower used in the ceremony!
The hydrangeas are used to represent Nicci’s maternal grandmother, Lorraine Bauer. She grew a beautiful garden her whole life and passed down her passion to the following generations. Lorraine grew hydrangeas on the east side of her house annually. The Bauer garden is a romantic memory of spending summers with her grandparents in Prague, Nebraska. All of the baby’s breath used in the ceremony is from that same garden. Jim Bauer will be wearing hydrangeas and baby’s breath in remembrance of Lorraine, his wife.

Daisies are used to commemorate Mary Poehling, Nicci’s paternal grandmother. Her favorite song was “A Daisy A Day” by Jud Strunk. It was a special song that she shared with her husband and Nicci’s grandfather, Bill Poehling. The song was recognized in her autobiography, “My Journey.” Bill will be wearing a daisy in honor of his wonderful late wife, Mary.

“I’ll give you a daisy a day, I’ll love you until the rivers run still, and the four winds we know blow away.”

Eucalyptus is used as the greenery and is meaningful to the Poehling family. It allows us to reminisce over our time spent in Melbourne, Australia. The scent brings back memories of dancing to the Wiggles, spending Christmas in 100 degree weather, exotic animals and fascinating landscape.
